Tokyo Police Club - Champ album download

Tokyo Police Club is an indie rock band from Newmarket, Ontario, Canada. It consists of vocalist and bassist David Monks (born January 21, 1987), keyboardist Graham Wright (born February 16, 1987), guitarist Josh Hook (born May 11, 1987), and drummer Greg Alsop (born March 20, 1985). The band has been nominated for multiple Juno awards, most recently in 2019 for Alternative Album of the Year.

In Internet years, Tokyo Police Club are just about ready for retirement. As a group of underage buddies from the Toronto suburbs, their antsy take on post-Strokes rock was an easy upload for music blogs upon the 2006 release of their snappy A Lesson in Crime EP. Back then, their chances of living beyond the next Hype Machine cycle was anyone's guess, and any notions of longevity seemed moot for a band that preferred to wrap things up around the two-minute mark. On the follow-up, Champ, TPC pull back on some of the beyond-their-years seriousness. Monks is still waxing about lost time and half-sour childhood memories, but he's also referencing 90s R&B duo K-Ci & JoJo and confessing his admittedly unwise dreams of wedding a dancer or "a vegetarian who can't stand to be wrong. The album title sounds like a casual term of endearment or a floppy dog.

Tokyo Police Club first hit their stride back in 2006 when, straight out of high school, their hyperactive mini-album A Lesson in Crime came from. Includes unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more. Purchasable with gift card.

When the songs were done, we went out to Los Angeles and recorded them up in the California sunshine with Rob Schnapf, who also produced Champ. TPC is a rock record with tons of guitars. We're extremely proud of it and you can listen to it here.

Tokyo Police Club took themselves seriously, sure, but quickly. That was then and this is now, and the most dramatic shift notable in 2010 is how calm and how patient the band have become, at least in the context of themselves. Champ jumps over the thirty minute hurdle and becomes the longest record they’ve put out yet, with more songs nearing the three minute region than ever before. Gone are the mere fragments of songs and in their wake are actual ones. The band always seem to pull off the quality they want from their songs on Champ, and they do it without making any drastic musical changes - it’s hard not to pull a frown when asked to by a band playing this emotively (I forgot to mention the guitar interchanges, which are possibly the biggest heart-breakers here). This doesn’t mean there aren’t scatterings of the louder Tokyo Police Club, but it’s certainly used as a mean to different ends.
